Case Study: Nozzle Characterization

Nozzles are used in a variety of processes – in addition to paint spraying, they are also used in process engineering applications and in internal combustion engines (for example, as diesel injectors), as well as in the exhaust systems of internal combustion engines for injecting the nitrogen oxide reducer AdBlue.

Here is an example of an (anonymised) measurement report for an AdBlue nozzle.

SpraySpy® enables such systems to be measured easily and accurately. With the aid of an automated scanning unit, the measurement system scans the spray cone step by step and records precise droplet information at each grid point. This can be helpful, for example, in the development of new injection systems or in the evaluation of numerical simulation models.

The measurement results can be processed in various ways and, for example, evaluated graphically as an easily readable false-colour image. Another application example is the measurement of paint spray guns for quality control purposes.

A digital spray pattern helps quality managers to quickly and easily identify deviations in nozzle parameters. The fact that the digital spray pattern also significantly simplifies quality documentation is a welcome bonus.

By linking to a movement unit, SpraySpy® can also generate false-colour images of the spray behaviour fully automatically.
